In chapter 6, Atticus had told the children to leave Boo Radley alone. Jem and Dill didnt listen so on Dills last night in Maycomb, after watching Mr.Avery until he went in to his house they convinced Scout to go with them. They convinced her and went over to the Radley place and they snuck up to his house to peek in to the window. They couldn’t see much in the window so Jem had creeped up on the porch. Dill and Scout saw a dark figures shadow fall on Jem. Jem knew he was there so he ran with Dill and Scout out of his yard. They were almost to the fence that separated there yard from the schoolyard and they heard a shotgun blast go off. They were crawling under the fence and Jem caught his pants on the barb wire fence. He had to wriggle out of them and go home without them. When they neared the house they could see a small crowd of people forming. The children went over so they wouldn’t look to suspicious. Nathan Radley said that he saw a coloured man on his property and that the next time he saw someone on his property he was going to shoot them. After a couple minutes Miss Staphanie noticed that Jem wasn’t wearing pants. Dill made up an excuse that Jem lost them to dill in a game of poker. That night Jem decided that he had to go and get his pants so he wouldn’t have to tell atticus about the whole thing. Scout didn’t want Jem to go because she thought that he would get shot and that he should just tell Atticus because a whipping from him would be better than getting shot. Jem refused to listen to Scout. He said that Atticus had never whipped him in his life and that he wanted to keep it that way forever, so he went back for his pants. After a while Jem crept back to the house with his pants.
If I was in Jems situation I would have done the same thing and gone back to get my pants. I would have made sure that the Radleys had gone to bed so I would know they weren’t going to come out while I was getting my pants.
