In this chapter, it starts out with Scout telling Cecil Jacobs to take back what he called Atticus. She didn't understand what he was calling him but Cecil told everyone that Atticus 'defended niggers'. Scout had promised Atticus that she wouldn't fight so she walked away from Cecil. This wasn't the last time someone had brought the trial into a conversation. It became christmas soon and their Uncle Jack had come to stay with the Finches. He is described as smelling like alochol and something sweet. He is a doctor and has a very fat cat named Rose Aylmer. He also likes to tease Miss Maudie about getting married and in her own way, she always declines. For their present, he brought with him rifles for the children. Over the school year Scout has taken a liking towards swearing and on the one night having dinner when she asked for someone to pass the 'damn ham', Uncle Jack took her aside and had a conversation with her. He told her that he didn't want to hear any swears coming out of her mouth while he was around.
On Christmas day, Atticu, Jack, and the children go to Finch's Landing and this is when we are introduced to Aunt Alexandra, Uncle Jimmy, and Francis their grandson. Aunt Alexandra is described as being a proper lady and she can't leave Scout alone about dressing like a boy. James on the other had says nothing at all. The only time he said something to Scout was to tell her to get off of a fence. Fancis is a spoiled little boy whose father is Aunt Alexandra's son. Francis begins a fight with Scout because he called Atticus a 'nigger lover'. This caused Scout to snap and begin fighting and swearing at Francis. He then told Jack and Alexandra that Scout had hit him and of course not the entire story. Jack then diciplined Scout by spanking her without a word of her side of the story. Once they got home however, Scout told him the entire story but made him promise not to tell Atticus what they were fighting about. Later on in the night Scout got out of bed for a glass of water but stopped to listen in on the conversation Jack and Atticus were having. Jack was telling Atticus that he must not be ready for kids because of how the night went. Scout was waiting for him to tell Atticus about the night but her didn't. Instead Atticus talked to him about the trial and how Tom doesn't have much of a chance but soon figures out that Scout is listening so he sends her off to bed.
I think that in this Chapter we are introduced to some important characters even though some of them are not in the book for very long. James and Alexandra have a terrible relationship because they don't speak to each other and that probably leave Alexandra bored and feeling an emptiness. That's my theory as to why she is constantly trying to make Scout something she isn't because she has always wanted a daughter, someone she could teach things about life to and help in their life. Francis is another character who refers to Atticus as a 'nigger lover' but what i think he's doing is just repeating what he hears around his home. Whatever the parents' beliefs are, they will be passed onto their child. Uncle Jack seems to be alot like Atticus but when he spanked Scout and didn't get her side of the story, it just shows that he isn't used to children because he doesn't have any or a wife.
