Chapter 22 & 23 - to kill a mockingbird

This chapter is after the time Tom Robinson loses his court hearing, and as usual Atticus is impassive again even though he just lost a case. Everyone was upset, well the blacks and Jem, Dill, Scout, and Aunt Alexandra were. Jem was really beaten up about it and really upset. He got really angry saying it wasnt right and nobody should be treated that way. He thought it was unfair and cruel. The next day everyone sent Atticus gifts of approval and thanking him for doing as much as he could for Tom. He was so proud, his eyes welled up with tears, and he went out for a stroll. As usual Miss Stephanie was gossiping and quivering with curiousity and excitement. Miss Maudie took the kids inside and fed them cake as usual, except this time Jem got a bigger piece. He talks about how none of this was fair, this chapter and the progressing ones show Jem's maturity more and more everytime. At the end of this chapter Mr. Ewell threatens Atticus and spits in his face.

Chapter 23

Tom loses his appeal and gets moved to a more serious prison. While Atticus reacts almost as if nothing happened with the threat and the spitting. all he said was he wished Mr. Ewell didnt chew tabacco. He is very good about this and says he feels bad and its fair because he destroyed all Bob's life in court. Jem again matures and says it isnt right again, as the children worry for their dad, but Atticus assures them it'll be fine. Jem still is angry, and Atticus gives a big speech on how nothing is fair in life, and thats just the way it is and a black mans word will never beat a white mans ever. They all say how they hope it changes. Scout doesnt really understand and Auntie gives her a hard time but Jem sticks up for Scout saying shes only nine, and this again shows his growing maturity. At the end of this chapter they say their reasons for Boo staying inside and still have a wanting to see him.

  1. I agree with everything said about this chapter, and the summary you gave was easy to understand. I think that everyone in the jury should have been more fair, than as racist against Tom as they were.

  2. I agree with your post.
I think that the jury was unfair about Tom's hearing and they should have listened to what Tom had said and listened closely to Mayella because she was dropping hints that Bob Ewell did this to her and not Tom. The jury and judge also should have listened to Atticus because he knows what he was talking about and he said Tom couldn't have done it because someone who did this had to be left handed and Tom's left hand was crippled.
